Darrington Strong General Meeting Minutes
July 18, 2018
President Martha Rasmussen opened the meeting with introductions & Steve Somsen gave the treasurer’s report:
Grand total of three accounts at Coastal Community Bank: $19,292.60
Membership: 37 members (17 business, 14 community & 6 non-profit)
Amy Lucas updated us on the status of Whitehorse Trail improvements, Whitehorse Park improvements and the Oso Slide Memorial project.
Dayn Brunner and Denny Fenstermaker detailed the upcoming levy and improvements to the Whitehorse Community Center.
Friends for Public Use (FFPU): Martha updated us on local road work including the White Chuck and Suiattle River roads.
Friends of North Mountain: Paul Wagner gave a status of the gate and deck access hatch. Discussion ensued about finding a “watchman” for the summer and mitigating vandalism by maintaining a presence up there.
Committee Reports:
Darrington Events: Joanne Milton reported on the outcome of the street fair, art/photography show and quilt show. Awards were distributed to the visiting artists.
Darrington Area Resource Advocates (DARA): Martha updated us and there was some discussion on the Mtn. Loop Highway feasibility study.
Whitehorse Mountain Music Festival: Martha met with Jan McClellan and Marla Skaglund earlier to discuss a country/blues music festival as a potential fundraiser for the Oso Slide Memorial on Sept 21, 2019.
Darrington Miner’s Monument: Dave Bell proposed sprucing up the plaque on the monument so it could be read by visitors.
Darrington Collaborative: Mayor Rankin gave an update on Segelson Ridge and the presentation to the USFS-region six. Paul Wagner detailed work on Clear Creek road and temporary closures during the week.
Darrington Library: Asheley Bryson reported that the library is partnering with north counties for the north counties community collaborative to reduce generational poverty in Darrington. The library’s particular focus is on childhood learning and care. She also discussed a partnership (in the works) with the Outdoor Club of Darrington. Other potential players are the NW Avalanche Center, the Evergreen Mtn Bike Alliance and Jim Whittaker’s son. The Friends of the Library are considering hosting a showing of the movie “Dirtbag” as a potential fundraiser.
